Not your typical design-from-scratch project.

Not your typical design-from-scratch project.

Shopify is a platform where technically one person could handle all aspects in an e-commerce business in one dashboard. In other words, data entry and admin is prioritized and there were technical difficulties in sketching and designing tables from scratch. The design aspects for the website is managed in a tool called “Theme Editor”.

I took a look at how HE used to input and display product descriptions and data. As shown below, product descriptions for each product are put
under the product pages in the Shopify Admin, not the website theme.

Because all product information and specifications are put under “description”, no third-party app will be able to identify the different categories but instead perceive everything as one category.

Overview

Hillsound Equipment(HE) is an outdoor brand that produces backpacking, hiking, and trail running accessories including a good selection of crampons and gaiters for different purposes.

HE had problems with helping its users find the right product for their needs. They used various tools to tackle the problem but weren’t satisfied with their performances and sought further improvements.

I examined and surfaced a deeper user issue to propose a design solution that increased product comparison efficiency.

The launch of the feature gave a notable positive impact, with a 9% decrease of product recommendation inquiries on the website’s customer service platform.

HE has had a comparison feature running on the website but through the research above, a key problem surfaced:

To premise, I looked up around 8-9 outdoor equipment brands’ websites to see what features they use to help users compare their products. The insight was that all of them were utilizing the comparison tables or no other feature at all.

For industries that sells products with specifications, clean and clear tables were key. Another thing to note was that brands display a very good sense of hierarchy - especially ones that have a vast amount of specifications to show.

In the midst of brainstorming for solutions, I noticed a tool that Hillsound wasn’t using at all.

To be able to specify and categorize the data, I used a rather newly introduced feature from Shopify called “Metafield”s. These are custom data mechanisms that help online stores customize the functionality and appearance of the Shopify store by letting you save specialized information that isn't usually captured in the Shopify admin.

Before adding the metafields, I teamed with the marketing coordinator to figure out how we could structure the custom data. Based on the research findings from the expert chat service, Remark, we needed to specify the use cases for each product.

We asked the industrial/product designer to help us jot down an exhaustive list of the activities as well as bring in naming conventions that were mentioned in the customer conversations on Remark.

Due to time constraints, we quickly did a poll within the internal team and landed on the term, “Terrain”.

Implementing designs from scratch is difficult, especially if you don’t have a dev team. Instead, Shopify has an app store where stores can install and add different features to help improve the user experience.

Amongst the options, I put together a prioritation matrix to visualize the key features/functions to narrow down our best option and also present to my client.

Here’s what came to mind after wrapping up the project.

1

Let’s try to think of more analytics.

One of the key constraints to working on Shopify projects is that you have very limited resources for implementation, design and more importantly, data feedback. Because we didn’t have a team that worked on development or data analytics, I had to work around these constraints by collecting and analyzing data manually, which was fairly time-consuming. In further projects, I will be more attentive to whether I will be able to generate data and how I will be able to achieve that more early in the design process.

2

More user research here and there.

I believe that one of the top priorities for a designer is to ensure that we meet business goals and expectations (on top of creating great experiences for the users, of course).

However, I also acknowledge the importance of iterations and validation in designs through user research. If I had more time to proceed to the next steps after the launch, I would love to interact with real-life users and seek meaningful insights through research methods such as usability testing and interviews.
