The back story of my home organization story.

The back story of my home organization story.

Overview

I started a whole new life coming to Vancouver around 5 months ago in May. Although I live with my husband, this opened an opportunity to see what kind of a person I am moving out of my parent’s house for the first time.

I came to learn that I LOVE to label and organize things. I didn’t like a whole bunch of bottles with different sizes and shapes in storage. I wanted to make good use of space in our new home, so I decided to get bottles to help with efficient organization and storage.

With the help of inspiration from Pinterest and IG, I bought myself a printer and some sticker sheets and started my organization journey.

I documented and created a “case study” of this small passion of mine to show you a glimpse of who I am, what I like, what my thought process was like, and who knows - this might spark some motivation in you to make some custom labels yourself when you’ve got some downtime!

I first made a list of what I had, then grouped them by category. This process made it easier to think about how many bottles of what kind of bottles.

After receiving and finding the right colour and size of empty bottles, I converted mm/cm to pixels. This was to make it more convenient to design in Figma with the right sizing.

  1. DESIGN AWAY!

  1. DESIGN AWAY!

Initially, I went for what looked good in my eyes at a glance: a clean, simple, modern aesthetic. I stayed away from any vivid hues and ended up with a very monochromatic palette.

Laminating sheets had different dimensions from the sticker sheets, therefore, I had to be extra careful before the printing.

After 3 months of use, I realized some of these labels weren't working for me. Aesthetics mattered, but the labels needed their priorities checked straight. So here it is, labels 2.0.

  1. I tend to not pay attention to where I put back a bottle after its use.

  2. I look at the top of the bottles for refills, not the sides.

BEFORE

  • Labels were stuck on the larger side of bottle.

  • I was only able to see the product until I grabbed it.

  • Small text size made it even harder for me to read the labels.

AFter

  • Labels were transferred to the front side of bottle.

  • Now able to read the product label before reaching it.

  • Enlarged text size to match other products for consistency/aesthetics & readability.

Problem 2: LITTLE DISTINGUISHMENT

Problem 2: LITTLE DISTINGUISHMENT

Poor eyesight.

Poor eyesight.

For a "minimal" look, I created labels with fairly small font sizes. Because the rest of the labels looked very similar from one another, my husband and I experienced a good number of incidents where we washed our hands with dish soap instead of hand soap. In sum, we couldn't tell between the two.

To enhance usability to this, I:

  1. Enlarged & capitalized the text sizes.

  2. Incorporated iconography for visual aid.

This is how the labels used to look in front of the sink.

AFter

Little differences go a long way. No more hand washing with dish soap for us!
